“Students for Life” Pro-Life Demonstration on Clemson Campus- IMPORTANT UPDATE

DISCLAIMER: Stories are not endorsements. I try to report as fairly as possible.

Students arrived at classes this Wednesday morning to see a cluster of small white crosses dotting the North Green. There were two signs in front of the cross-laden field- one that said “Students for Life”, and another that said, “In memory of children lost to abortion”.

Screen Shot 2014-10-29 at 11.24.49 AMMany sources say that somewhere on a sign was the phrase, “Tragedy-4 students or 4 million babies?”, referencing the deaths of four Clemson students this year. However, Students for Life denies putting up this sign and says that they absolutely do not condone this sign. They consider this sign vandalization of their demonstration.

According to the “Students for Life” Facebook group, the group set up the display at 9pm on Tuesday, and planned to take it down Wednesday night at 6pm. This did not go according to B1HqqitIMAAM-jXplan, as the display was gone by 10am. There are no confirmed reports as to why exactly the display was taken down. I’ll update this post as I find more information.

CORRECTION 12:30PM: Alleged sign read: “Tragedy-4 Students or 4 Million Babies?” This post has been updated to reflect this.

UPDATE: Peter, an apparent member of “Students for Life”, sent me this comment:

“Hey there,

Member of Students for Life here at Clemson. First off, yes, this display was 100% approved by all authority heads we needed to go through.

Secondly, no one in our group posted that sign, stating “Tragedy – 4 students vs. 4 million babies”. We do not condone this sign remotely, and are actively against any comparison of life in terms of size or value. We believe all life is sacred, from conception until natural death. As anyone who goes to Clemson knows, the entire student body was saddened by the death of each of those individuals. We would not trivialize their lives in any manner.”

Devin Gibson, president of Students for Life, also posted this comment on Facebook.

After the crosses were taken down and put into a pile, someone placed other signs on the pile. They have since been removed. CLICK PHOTOS TO ENLARGE. (Photos from Kendall Cavolina)

Devin Gibson, president of Students for Life, sent me another sign that was allegedly also found on North Green during the day. Bernadette Wersinger took the photo:

  1. I’m almost certain there was no way this was okayed by the administration. At my university, albeit a super liberal one in a major liberal city, students can barely get a booth for this kind of thing, regardless of which side of the debate they’re on. It’s very difficult for me to believe that a public university would willingly give such a large chunk of space to such a controversial display.

    1. Thanks for the reply Peter. I’ll post this comment on the article as soon as I can.

  3. What is the sign on the left supposed to say? I can’t tell. (The sign that starts off with 77%)

    1. Hi Joe. The sign says, “77% of anti-abortion (supporters?) are men; 100% of them will never be pregnant”. I put supporters in parentheses because I actually can’t figure out what the word is. You should also be able to click on the photo to enlarge it.

  4. That’s the word I couldn’t figure out. Thank you for the reply Ellen. 🙂

  5. Also the word on the sign appears to be leaders

    1. Thanks Clark- I edited for your other comment as well.

  6. It’s so sad that people think it’s ok to do this. Those are horrible things to say. It’s so unfortunate that (probably) just one angry person has the ability to ruin this.

  7. It's her body let her do what she will with it! October 29, 2014 — 11:24 pm

Abortion is a good thing, we have enough unwanted babies in the world. Stop tellinf females that it’s not right to give their fetus back to God! Not every woman can handle carrying a child within them.

    1. Exactly! It’s her body! Stop telling her what to do with it! If she doesn’t want to feed her newborn baby she doesn’t have to! Stop telling her what to do with her body – like moving around and feeding the thing. – Oh wait – you’re a hypocrite spreading a line you don’t actually believe in because you think it sounds good. We tell people what to do with their bodies on a daily basis if it affects other people – which it the crux of the issue as always. Your nonsense is a totally pointless distraction.

    2. I read your comments and I’m sorry that you went through two traumatic events. I aborted two children years ago and I can relate to your experience to some extent.

After twenty years, I wish I could tell you that the “my body/my choice” rhetoric is true and that abortion is not a big deal but I would be lying.

You made the best decision you could based on your circumstances and on your support system. I don’t judge you for that but I can’t lie to you. Abortion doesn’t send unwanted children back to God… it destroys them and destroys a part of us mothers too.

Abortion can affect you in ways no one can predict: physically, mentally and spiritually.

If you ever want to talk, I think my blog and Facebook page are linked to this comment. Good luck to you.

And you Sarah are the main reason girls kill thaw loves because “oh my god you are a terrible person if you don’t want you f-Ing baby!” I’m a woman and I have had an abortion and I’m not sorry I did it either. So next time you want to say it’s just sounds like a good line, why not stop an think “hmmm why am I judging someone else that “IS” not me?!” It’s an opinion, just like assholes everyone has one, and you sweet Sarah are not different!

    1. Here’s an idea, “it’s her body blah blah blah”: don’t get pregnant in the first place! Take responsibility for your actions! It’s not just her/your body anymore – the baby should also get a say in the matter. I don’t know what you are babbling on about, station that it’s an “opinion”. When another human life is at stake, it ceases to be just an opinion. Either way, no one but God is judging you, but I am certainly pitying you for your selfishness and your terrible, terrible grammar.

  9. It's her body let her do what she will with it! October 30, 2014 — 8:11 am

Actually the baby doesn’t have a say! Because it hasn’t been born yet! And here’s a thought for you! I was raped! So fuck you!

  10. We really need to start having educated discourse on this matter instead of being so, so angry at each other. Sarah and “It’s her body…” should both take a step back and at least attempt to understand the other side (because I don’t see the effort made by either of them to do so).

To Sarah – we should be reaching out to women who might be prone to having an abortion and giving them the resources and information they need to better make their decision (which will hopefully lead to them not having an abortion). Birthright of Clemson is exceptional in this regard, but they are so rarely advertised. There are plenty (PLENTY!) of options available to women other than expunging the baby, but getting angry, calling those women names, telling them they’re terrible – this behavior won’t solve any problems. It’s divisive.

To “It’s her body…” – Abortions are not easy to endure, and if it has in any way colored your perception of yourself, your body, or those around you, I recommend talking to somebody about it (a professional). I’m so sorry that the circumstances led you to have the abortion, but I don’t know if you were given adequate counsel before going through with it. It’s something every woman needs support with, whether the pregnancy is expected or not.

The general state of affairs with human sexuality, I think, is not where it should be. We complain of overcrowding when we really have an overconsumption/waste problem (see ‘Carrying Capacity’). We talk about the spread of disease through sexual intercourse, then dole out condoms so that people can continue to have sex even if they’re infected with one STD or another saying, “Don’t worry – you can have sex with anybody now that you’ve got this little rubber sheath.” How do you prevent unwanted pregnancies? The answer is simple and unpopular – you educate on abstinence. When you can say ‘no,’ to somebody, and when the general public accepts and respects that ‘no,’ then finally saying ‘yes’ not only becomes more meaningful, but allows you to embrace everything which potentially comes from that ‘yes’ (I’m talking about kids).

There is no reason we should be a people divided. Children are our greatest asset. In this ‘me’ culture, how can we begin shifting the paradigm to actually live out the messages so many of us preach of tolerance, acceptance, love, respect, generosity, etc?

It amazes me how close-minded everyone in South Carolina is, you can’t get married to the same sex because it’s against what you think it’s God’s laws, even though it’s not. You can’t even (though it’s) legal to abort the fetus, because you are a terrible unfeeling person if you do. Honestly I thought this was a free country, obviously I was mistaken. And for your information Emilie, auto-correct is an unholy bitch, so excuse me for the grammical errors!

  12. It's her body let her do what she will with it! October 30, 2014 — 8:25 am

Jon, I know you are just trying to help but I didn’t want that man’s bastard being born, so like I said everyone has their own opinions.

  13. Why is everyone fighting?! Who cares if “It’s Her Body…” did what she thought was right. Why should it matter to you Sarah or you Emilie that she did what she had to do? You were not in her situation, being raped is a serious happening in a male or female’s life. Not every woman wants to carry the child that was made after being raped. So cut her some slack, I mean it’s fine that you want to state what you want to but correcting someone’s grammar, pitying them, or making fun of their statement is very childish. Likewise cussing isn’t nessacary either so please grow up, we are in college now people not elementary school!

  14. It’s a student organization raising awareness, just like every other student org. They set up Pro-choice and Pro-life booths at my school because *shocker* EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO THEIR OPINION. Just because you may not agree doesn’t mean you have tear it down with your negative comments.
