Students hosted a short memorial in the Student Union on Monday in remembrance of Walter Scott. Scott, a North Charleston man, was fatally shot while running from police officer Michael T. Slager. Slager has been charged with murder. A link to a news story can be found here.
When I arrived at the memorial, Black Student Union president Ian Bateman and vice president Destinee Wilson were manning the memorial.
Bateman encouraged students to sign a “We Are Walter Scott” poster pledging against police brutality. They also had a small whiteboard with the hashtag #IAmWalterScott written on it so students could take a picture with the hashtag. Students were also encouraged to wear green or black, as Scott was wearing a green shirt when he was killed.
